Families’ and Children’s Wellbeing" at the PhD Programme Economics and Business Economics.
The position is available from 1 September 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter).
The research project
Nearly every high-income country in the world provides some form of tax credit or unconditional cash assistance to families with children, a “child benefit” broadly speaking, yet we know surprisingly little about the long-run effects of such programs on families’ and children’s wellbeing, including the role such benefits play in supporting disadvantaged families with volatile sources of income. We also know little about how these programs’ key design features impact their efficacy. Our project will be among the first to provide causal evidence on these important questions. The Research group
The senior researchers on the project are PI Professor Marianne Simonsen (Aarhus University; www.au.dk/en/msimonsen@econ.au.dk) and co-PI Professor Marianne Page (University of California, Davis; mepage.faculty.ucdavis.edu). Simonsen will be the main advisor to the PhD student. Her research studies policies that directly or indirectly affect children’s outcomes and she is an expert on the Danish administrative data. Co-PI Professor Page is an expert on intergenerational mobility, equality of opportunity, and the social safety net.Job description
The project will study whether access to child benefits affects children’s short and long-run outcomes. It will also explore how key design features impact program efficacy. The PhD project is to be carried out as part of the research project.
