Student Assistant for the Department of Management

Do you want to see how research works from the inside? Are you interested in how life events outside work reshape careers and labor markets? How do divorce, criminal records, or losing a job leave lasting marks on how people find work and how firms adjust?

Residuals Lab (https://www.tundecserpes.com/reslab) at the Department of Management, Aarhus University, has an opening for a student assistant, starting March 1, 2026 and continuing until you complete your master’s degree. You will handle administrative and practical tasks in research projects that study social market frictions.

Your tasks:

  • You will support research projects that combine population registers with government agency records.
  • You will pass an approval process and become user of Statistics Denmark confidential register data.
  • You will prepare and document datasets.
  • You will coordinate with owners of external data.
  • You will attend weekly all hands meetings during the academic year (flexible during exam season).
A central task involves working with existing data pipelines written in SAS and other languages. These pipelines process very large datasets, and you maintain and adapt the scripts that run them. External collaborators develop machine-learning scripts that feed into these pipelines. You execute and monitor these scripts, then integrate their output into project datasets. Throughout this work, you maintain clear documentation of data workflows.

We need you to:

  • Work independently and follow structured instructions.
  • Be enrolled in a master’s degree program at Aarhus University.
  • Have documented experience working with SAS, Python is a bonus.
  • Have experience working with very large datasets.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing in English and preferably in Danish.

In return, we offer:

  • Work in a small research environment where we shape tasks around your strengths and interests.
  • Close collaboration with me, Tünde Cserpes, and frequent interaction with researchers from several institutions, ranging from research assistants to full professors, including collaborating faculty from a partner business school in Japan and researchers from the Rockwool Foundation.
  • Mentoring for students interested in applying to competitive PhD programs and access to an alumni network of previous research assistants.
