The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Aarhus University, invites applications for a position as senior advisor in outdoor animal welfare from June 1, 2026.
The position
We seek a candidate ideally with a background in animal welfare science and/or a background related to sustainability in animal production, preferably with insight into management, production, health, and welfare of systems for keeping animals outside.
Research tasks
The focus of the position is on:
- Research on the development of sustainable systems for keeping farm animals partly or entirely outdoors, and acceptance/interpretation among different groups of stakeholders (political, societal, environmental and economical sustainability).
- Research on the development and application of systems for surveillance and documentation of outdoor animal welfare.
- Research on the development of systems for small ruminants under Danish conditions.
The candidate will in addition have to:
- Provide research-based consultancy to authorities and coordinate consultancy tasks within the Department
- Teach and supervise students at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels within the scientific domain.
Your profile
The preferred candidate should demonstrate:
- Experience in qualitative or quantitative research methods, and research experience in approaches that consider effects on animal welfare and health, as well as effects on climate and the environment.
- Ability to develop and achieve a clear research profile through international publications.
- A significant profile within supervision and teaching.
- Ability to collaborate by developing and demonstrating an efficient national and international network. Preferably, experience providing research-based public advise.
The preferred candidate is expected to join and develop ongoing research within the research group
Management and Modelling. The research activities are interdisciplinary and include collaboration with farmers, the farming industry, authorities, and NGOs. The candidate is expected to take part in teaching and supervision of students at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels as well as veterinary practitioners, advisors, and assessors in industry and authority level.

Technical Sciences refers to the
Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
