Postdoctoral position on methanotrophic bacteria

We invite applications for a 24-month postdoctoral scientist position to work on the project “Anaerobic Growth of Aerobic Methanotrophic Bacteria in Lake Environments (AGAMBLE)”. The position will begin on March 1st, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job Description

Aerobic methanotrophic bacteria are increasingly found oxidising methane in anoxic freshwater sediment environments. This project aims to determine how this might be possible using pure cultures of methanotrophic bacteria. There are some hypotheses and experiments that are already planned for this position, but a good candidate will bring their own creative ideas to the problem being addressed. The postdoc will use the following methods:

  • Anaerobic and aerobic cultivation of bacteria with monitoring of oxygen, iron, and methane concentrations
  • Bioelectrochemical systems
  • Sensitive oxygen measurement methods, including electrochemical microsensors and optodes
  • Transcriptomic sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of methanotroph cultures

This position is financed by the Villum Foundation. We seek candidates with a background in microbiology, microbial ecology, microbial biogeochemistry, or other related fields. Candidates who have prior experience with methanotrophic prokaryotes, metal-oxide-respiring prokaryotes, or bioelectrochemical systems are particularly encouraged to apply.

Who we are

The successful candidate will be employed by the Department of Biology at Aarhus University and work in the Section for Microbiology at this department. The section employs 12 permanent scientific staff and ~20 PhD students and postdocs. Research at the section covers studies of microbial physiology, evolution, ecology, and biogeochemistry. It integrates basic and applied research, addressing the role, ecophysiology and evolution of microorganisms in natural, technical and clinical systems and in biotechnology. The section has well-developed shared laboratory facilities and a permanent support staff of seven highly skilled laboratory technicians.

The principal investigator for this project is Associate Professor Ian Marshall.

Qualifications

  • Relevant university education and PhD degree
  • Relevant background – this could be microbiology, microbial ecology, microbial biogeochemistry, or other related fields
  • Ability to work and collaborate in a group, to develop new ideas, and to write and communicate in English

Deadline

All applications must be received no later than November 1st, 2025.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
