Postdoc in Forensic Odontology 3D Data

The Department of Forensic Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of Forensic Odontology as per 1 December 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 2 years.

As a Postdoc at the Department of Forensic Medicine, you will be part of a workplace with dedicated and specialised employees. The shared goal of our employees is to prevent and solve crimes, accidents, premature deaths and suicides through research, education and forensic examinations. The department is part of the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University with a permanent staff of seventy employees who work in two departments delivering impartial and evidence-based public sector consultancy for the Danish police. The Section of Forensic Chemistry identifies and determines the purity of drugs in both biological material and illicit drugs seized by the police. The Section of Forensic Pathology and clinical forensic medicine performs forensic autopsies, crime scene investigations and clinical forensic examinations. Both departments hold either ISO 17025 or ISO 17020 quality standard accreditations. In addition to the two sections, the department has three research units which focus on bioanalytical chemistry, forensic imaging and clinical forensic medicine. The employees work in an interface between public sector consultancy and basic and applied research, and the department has particular focus on the good work environment, as this is a prerequisite for high quality in the performance of tasks at all levels. About the research project

The proposed project aims to explore and innovate the use of 3D scanning data in forensic odontology, in particular within the two disciplines human identification and bite mark analysis. The plan is to extend beyond our research group’s current results and explore quantitative 3D matching of tooth surfaces from related individuals, and chemical trauma scenarios. Further, the plan is to develop a novel quantitative 3D bite mark analysis method.

The overall perspective is to secure implementation of 3D dental data within the field of forensic odontology.

The project includes the candidate running clinical studies to collect data and exploring the advantages and disadvantages of implementing automated 3D matching of tooth surfaces.

The candidate is encouraged to continue beyond the research group’s results regarding human identification (disaster victim identification) and to work on developing a novel method for quantitative bite mark analysis.

Your job responsibilities

As Postdoc in forensic odontology your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:
  • Independent research of high international quality.
  • Scientific publication of results as well as popular communication.
You will report to Assistant Professor Line Staun Larsen.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at PhD level, for example within the areas of bioinformatics, machine learning or forensic odontology. We favour experience in computational data analysis, and the capability to quickly gain the ability to run a clinical study and conduct intraoral 3D scanning. Further, experience with Python programming and digital 3D meshes would be considered an advantage.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Obtaining a child certificate can prove a prerequisite for employment in the position.
