Biostatistician at Department of Clinical Epidemiology

The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as a biostatistician at Department of Clinical Epidemiology as per 1st of July 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to two years, and the working hours are 3.7 hours per week.

Department of Clinical Epidemiology

We represent an ambitious department that aims to maintain our position as one of the leading international research departments within clinical epidemiology. Our mission is to improve clinical care by working in global partnerships to produce high-quality clinical epidemiological research, promote education, and translate research into clinical practice. Our catchphrase is “big data, big opportunities”, which reflects our access to the unique Danish clinical databases and national healthcare registries that provide the basis for our research. We collaborate nationally and internationally with other academic institutions, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and healthcare authorities. Ninety percent of the department’s funding is raised through contractual research and from various foundations. We publish approx. 250 scientific papers and numerous technical reports annually.

Department of Clinical Epidemiology is established as a joint research department between the Central Denmark Region, Aarhus University, and Aarhus University Hospital. The department is one of the largest epidemiology departments in Denmark with approx. 100 employees, including 25 biostatisticians working with SAS programming. The additional staff comprises medical doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals, administrative staff, and approx. 30 PhD students.

You will be part of an international work environment and a department that delivers frontline research within clinical epidemiology. The tone in the department is informal. We strive to help and support each other in solving tasks with quality as the key priority. The department encourages competence development through collaboration with colleagues, internal education programs, and visits to other research environments.

Your job responsibilities

As a biostatistician within the Nordic Upper GI Research Collaboration, your primary tasks are to contribute to and coordinate large‑scale Nordic registry‑based research projects across participating countries. You will support the collaboration through planning and implementation of study protocols, coordination of data flows from national health registries, and contribution to data harmonization and statistical analyses within the secure analytical environment.

Your main tasks will consist of:

• Data extraction from national registries.
• Data transfer to Statistics Denmark.
• Data harmonization, management, and analysis.
• Communication between country teams.
• Manuscript development and authorship.
• Timelines and documentation standards.   

You will report to the Head of Department of Clinical Epidemiology Henrik Toft Sørensen.

Your qualifications

We envisage that you have the following qualifications:

• PhD or MSc in statistics, mathematics, or epidemiology.
• Knowledge of various statistical methods and their application, combined with programming experience in the statistical software program SAS.
• Experience with data management based on healthcare data and/or other large datasets.
• Interest in improving existing methods and implementing new techniques.
• Interest in healthcare research.

Your competences

You have an academic background in epidemiology, clinical research, public health, biostatistics, or a related field, and documented experience with registry‑based research and the handling of large‑scale health data. Experience with Nordic health registries, multinational research collaborations, and work within secure data environments is considered an advantage. Previous experience with the Nordic Upper GI Research Collaboration is considered a prerequisite.

Terms of employment and pay are regulated by the collective agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and academics in the state.
