2-year postdoc position - ArcSolution

The Arctic is experiencing rapid changes due to climate change and pollution from local and distant sources, impacting human life, wildlife, and ecosystems. ArcSolution takes a holistic “One Health” approach to address these challenges, integrating local and indigenous knowledge with scientific research across four Arctic locations: Northern Finland, Svalbard, Northern Norway, and Greenland.
The consortium behind ArcSolution is a highly qualified and diverse team, consisting of 14 partners from 8 different nations, from a range of geographic regions, including the Arctic and other key areas. This “dream team” brings together esteemed researchers with proven expertise and a strong history of collaboration. Under experienced and dynamic leadership, the partners were selected for their scientific and practical experience, as well as their passion and commitment to the Arctic’s future. The present postdoc will work with:
  • Mass balance of contaminant influx from harvest of marine mammals into communities in Greenland and other Arctic nations
  • Assess concentrations in key species providing the data foundation for adverse health effect risk assessment
  • Assess hot spots in the Arctic of chemicals in local communities and exposure assessments
  • Assess food web dynamics in relation to climate change and infectious diseases and biodiversity (3PC)
  • Applications are invited for a 2-year and 3½ months position in the above-mentioned field of research at the Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark

This is a 2-year and 3½ months position starting 15 April 2026.


Job description

The successful candidate will join a strong research team that has gathered detailed data on the effects of contaminants on marine mammals over the last three decades, combining a variety of methods including PBPK modelling, TWI evaluations, mass balances, risk assessments and modelling of food web dynamics and disease screening. This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to our understanding of how multiple stressors including climate change, contaminants and diseases affect ocean health in the Arctic among other marine mammals and blue food and local communities’ One Health (3PC). The postdoc will be expected to contribute actively to the department’s advisory activities for the Danish Ministry of Environment, related to effects of Arctic contaminants. The postdoc is also expected to co-supervise graduate students, and to help secure funding for new research projects.


Qualifications:

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with the following qualifications:
  • A PhD degree within biology, environmental chemistry, chemistry, or similar
  • Experience with writing scientific publications
  • Experience in working with contaminants like PFAS, PCBs and mercury, fatty acids, stable isotopes and modelling in R
  • A talent for working with large data sets to model large-scale changes preferably being able to use ML
  • An ability to work in large consortia projects but also individually and in small teams, and be self-motivating.
  • Fluency in English (speaking and writing) 
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral, and an interest in spending a considerable amount of time on data crunching, scientific writing, coordinating and reporting.

In addition it will be considered an advantage if you have: 
  • been working on Arctic contaminants.
  • been on field work in Greenland or other Arctic regions.
  • experience with analytical instruments like ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS and/or GC-IRMS
  • initiated the development of a research network

The Department of Ecoscience is engaged in research programs and advisory work covering the major biological subdisciplines. We conduct world-class research in the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, Arctic environment and ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation biology and wildlife management. The Department currently employs approximately 275 academic and technical staff, as well as many PhD students.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
